GARETH BARRY has demanded Martin O’Neill lets him go to Liverpool.
The England star phoned his Aston Villa boss to plead for a move after nearly 10 years in the Midlands.
It marks A huge step up in the fight for the midfielder’s signature.
Barry’s agent Alex Black said: “Gareth has spoken to Martin since he returned from England’s game in Trinidad and told him how he feels.
“At this stage of his career Gareth wants to be playing Champions League football and believes this is his chance to do it.”
Kop chief Rafa Benitez has been on Barry’s trail for two months since SunSport exclusively broke the news that Liverpool had made him their No 1 target.
Barry’s big pal Steven Gerrard, the Liverpool captain, has also publicly campaigned for the transfer to happen.
But Villa have turned down two offers of ฃ10million and ฃ12m.
Barry has kept his counsel while Liverpool try to persuade O’Neill to sell.
But, with the Villa boss digging in, his skipper has taken matters into his own hands.
Villa want top dollar for Barry’s services and are refusing any player-plus-cash offers.
But Barry hopes a compromise deal can be thrashed out at around ฃ15m.

JOSE MOURINHO is ready to rip the heart and soul out of Chelsea by signing Michael Essien, Frank Lampard and Didier Drogba.
Mourinho was unveiled as Inter Milan's new boss today — and the Special One cannot wait to be reunited with his former players.
He said: "Almost all of them want to work with me again in the future and the same goes for me.
"I have a great relationship with most of my players and it is normal that rumours spread.
"It is normal as a consequence of the relationship with my players.
"But it depends on whether Chelsea want to sell — there has got to be a relation between what one club wants and what another one wants to do."
Mourinho was sacked by the Blues in September after a bust-up with owner Roman Abramovich.
He was linked with a return to Stamford Bridge but Inter moved swiftly to install him at the San Siro after sacking Roberto Mancini last week.
The Portuguese coach recently revealed he would happily kill his former club — and it appears he may get his wish by dismantling the side he built.
Along with Drogba, Lampard and Essien, Mourinho could also return to Chelsea to sign classy central defender Ricardo Carvalho.

ALEX FERGUSON is expecting Cristiano Ronaldo to confirm he is staying a Manchester United player.
And the Portugal winger would not be allowed to leave even if he wanted to go.
Fergie insists there is no way his star player will be signing for Real Madrid.
The United boss said: “I’m very confident about that. It’s a game Real play all the time. In the past they’ve done it with David Beckham, they’ve done it with Van Nistelrooy, they’ve done it with my fitness coach last summer — so we’re used to it.
“I am more than confident Cristiano will be with us next year. The Glazer family will not be messed about in this situation.
“We want Cristiano to stay for a long, long time. He is on a fantastic contract and quite rightly so — he’s the best player in the world.”
But Real president Ramon Calderon has refused to rule out a bid for the United winger.
Calderon said: “We would love to have Cristiano or any of the world’s great players here.”
